. this morning they put out a tracking poll that said the race was tied. this afternoon they put out a second tracking poll saying obama had a five point lead. what can you make of that? >> being a pollster's a tough job, you know. tough job. >> cornell, what do you make of the michigan poll? >> i think you're seeing a lot of fluidity in the electorate right now. look, romney had a great debate but i think that's somewhat fool's goal because i talk to my friends that worked on the kerry campaign about great debates. i think romney did give the electorate a chance to take a second look at him, particularly the undecided voters who were leaning republican from the start. i wouldn't put a lot of weight in any of these national polls for the next couple days. i think in the next week or so you will see some battleground state polls come out. those will be a more clear indication of whether or not the dynamic has changed. >> ari, before last week, president obama was showing strong signs of improvement on the economy, closing the gap in most polls. but i want to show you a number. the pew poll sho

: thanks in washington. "the wall street journal" this morning another comparison between the two candidates is and so much on the role of government, the definition of patriotism. president barack obama says he wants the new economic patriotism that mitt romney calls the presidential campaign a battle for the soul of america. the candidates are not only racing to win an election but they are dueling over the mantle of patriotism with each claiming to stand for the true american values, the implication still beyond rhetoric and extend to their thinking about domestic and foreign policy which is what we are talking about this morning. next is a call from janice in louisiana. a democrat. good morning. >> caller: hello. yes, i would like the government to [inaudible] >> host: janice, are you still there? we lost her. apologies. let's move on to gary in eaton ohio. independent. good morning. >> caller: good morning. i think -- i feel that the constitution is there to tell the government what they are supposed to do. and like the guy that brought up water, the epa puts fluoride, they t

that obama is not doing well on jobs. >> yes. >> all right, both ways. i thought what i'd bring this morning, joe, there were differences in style last night, two different economic programs on display, two different sets of facts about the past, i thought that was interesting and also on display, though, which was more interesting, two different philosophies about government. let's listen to republican candidate mitt romney on what he believes that role should be. >> look, the right course for america's government, we were talking about the role of government is not to become the economic player picking winners and losers, telling people who kind of health treatment they can receive, taking over the health care system that has existed in this country for a long, long time and has produced the best health records in the world. the right answer for government is to say how do we make the private sector become more efficient and more effective. >> so president obama responded with a more activist philosophy of government. >> government has the capacity, the federal government has the capacity

that's important. so i think that any obama supporter who really loves the president is a little worried that maybe sometimes he may speak longer than the evening news and the morning news the next day is able to cover in full. >> as someone who's moderated four debates with him can testify to that. congressman, to you, what's the biggest weakness governor romney has. i've moderated four debates with him as well. >> there's so much material to attack the president on -- >> no. not the president. romney's biggest weakness. >> well, i think part of the challenge is how do you succinctly get to that and at the same time when you only have 90 seconds or 120 seconds to answer a question then also be able to share your vision and your compassion to the voters that are watching at home. to be able to contrast the president's record and his vision, share with that in a compassionate way, that's challenging to do in 120 seconds. >> here's a big challenge that the president has, bill. look at this. likely voters we asked who will win the presidential debate? 56% said the president. 32% sai
